AFFAIRS OF CHINA,
CONFIDENTIAL.
[March 16.]
SECTION 2,
[9196]
No. 1.
Mr. Max Müller to Sir Edward Grey.-(Received March 16.)
Peking, March 16, 1910.
(No. 52.) (Telegraphic.) P. MACAO. As I have already reported in my despatch No. 71 of the 10th March, the Portuguese chargé d'affaires spoke to me on the 8th instant about the fishing bureau established by the Chinese at Wan-Chai, Lappa Island. The subject was mentioned by us both at the Wai-wu Pu. The Chinese reply, which will be forwarded by post, was very unsatisfactory. My Portuguese colleague has now received a note protesting that the status quo has been violated by the placing of a new buoy in the inner harbour near Green Island.
In confirmation of Sir John Jordan's surmise regarding the intention of the Chinese Government to consult the Chinese Minister to France, I am informed by the Wai-wu Pu that the latter returned a month ago from Europe and proceeded to Shanghae on four months' leave. (See your telegram No. 42 of the 14th March.)
